Mud Painting
I was very fortunate to observe rare behavior in Sandhill Cranes in mid-March 2022 at Loess Bluffs NWR in Missouri.
A pair of Cranes landed near my location and began painting themselves with mud. Crane experts believe that this behavior provides additional camouflage. The birds perform this behavior in the nesting season.
The mud gives their feathers a reddish color, which is less visible to many predators. Witnessing this activity made me believe the pair was preparing to nest at Loess Bluffs that season.
